Catching up with apprentice Tom

I am currently working at Parmiter’s School building a new science block; I'm based on site with our Project Manager. It’s a nice change to working from home full time - although working from home can have its benefits!

It's my first time working on a new build, my previous jobs were Phase 1 of Hat Works in Luton. Right back when I started at Neville’s I saw Hat House and Hat Factory being refurbished so it will be interesting to see how this project develops.

I’ve started my second year of university and as you might expect, the lectures are all online until Christmas at least.

The lectures do take some getting used to online, you certainly lose something from face to face lectures and some lecturers are a little harder to follow as they try and negotiate the challenges of teaching online.

The last few months have been different; since returning from furlough I’ve been working on a number of different jobs starting with assisting our Surveyor with another new tender. I started to look at a number of new trades for the first time including fire protection and M&E – although it feels as though I only really scratched the surface of them! The tender was submitted and agreed with a successful result.

I've also been assisting our Commercial Director with a number of jobs he has been running, checking subcontractor’s accounts at two other live sites. It was nice to get on site again for the first time since before lockdown.

It was strange looking back on my first year to think I spent almost four months of it at home on furlough, maybe my second year will go to plan a little more, maybe…
