National Apprenticeship Week - Tom Bullion
February 8th - 12th 2021 is National Apprenticeship Week and we wanted to catch up with our Trainee Surveyor, Tom Bullion, to see how he has been enjoying his apprenticeship so far. Here is what he had to say:
"I’ve been at the company for almost 18 months now (though 4 of those months were spent on furlough) and have really enjoyed my time here so far. It’s amazing looking back at when I first started with no real knowledge about construction to where I am now, people even tell me I sound like I know what I’m talking about - though I’m sure they are just being kind. In truth, I’m fortunate to have people around me that can explain what’s happening and why, I remember on my first day going on site at Hat House with our Senior Contract Surveyor, Kevin Neill, and it being as though people were speaking in a different language!
I became a surveyor by chance, I knew I wanted to do something construction related since my mother decided she would have a first floor added to our house a few years ago - seeing how that all happened really interested me! None of my family have ever worked in construction so I wasn’t entirely sure what discipline I wanted to work in, I looked at civil engineering at first as well as building surveying, and quantity surveying. When the opportunity arose for a quantity surveying apprenticeship everything seemed to fall into place. The Neville Special Projects office is only 10 minutes from home and Neville’s is known for their apprenticeships. While I didn’t know too much about the role at first, I came with an open mind and haven’t looked back since."
